Sustainable Cosmetics

The market of natural cosmetics is very rapidly growing. It’s characterized by complexity, concerning the ingredients of the products itself, as well as origins, working conditions, packaging, labels etc. It’s still difficult to compare them concerning their sustainability, and consumers remain to the question how sustainable the products really are. The natural cosmetics branch doesn’t have a regulating instance, and there doesn’t exist a definition for natural cosmetics by European law. In the case of Austria, natural cosmetics are defined by the Austrian Food Code. On European level, there are several guidelines that are relevant for cosmetics in general, like - EU-cosmetics directive European Directive 76 / 768 / EEC - EU legislation REACH - regulation n ° in 1907/2006 - EU eco-regulations (EC) No 834/2007]. For the natural cosmetics branch it’s important to go beyond and integrate the whole lifecycle: the objectives therefore are increasing resource and energy efficiency, environmental management, packaging, fair trade, transport, and many more aspects. Besides the well-known (natural) cosmetic concerns, who are working according to their own standards for sustainability, there are a lot of small & medium sized producers all over Europe. The objective is a wide application of the lifecycle approach for this group of enterprises.

Sustainable Tourism Network - Thailand

Thailand is a major destination for European tourists. There are many small and medium sized hotels and restaurants, being the backbone of the Thai tourism industry. According to the SWITCH program the focus will be on SMEs in the tourism sector. These SMEs will be organized in a Sustainable Tourism Network, supported to implement measures to comply with higher social and ecological standards. In cooperation with international travel corporations a labelling scheme and a certification program will be developed and incorporated in their promotion activities. The sustainability approach shall go beyond simple single measures and include catering, mobility, etc. and consider similar European and international developments. Crucial is the participation of international travel corporations, to create market pull. Another huge asset would be the partnership of a financial institution to provide financial support to SMEs

Sustainable Footwear – Made in Asia

Asia is one of the main manufacturing regions for footwear. In the production process manual operations are still important, wherefore labour standards and working conditions are a crucial issue. Regarding the ecological aspect, the leather production, especially tanneries, potentially create a substantial footprint. On the other hand more sustainable production processes are available. According to the SWITCH program the key target groups are SMEs (along the supply chain: tanneries, leather manufacturing, shoe manufacturing), government departments and international corporations. The SMEs shall be assisted and trained to implement sustainability measures for both social and ecological standards. Participating SMEs are trained, assisted with tools and know-how and finally certified. The final products will be marked with a sustainable footwear label and promoted for European markets in cooperation with international fashion corporations. Corporations will be supported in their marketing and communication activities, governmental departments get support to replicate and create favourable policy framework.

iSCARCE

Rare earth elements (Indium, Neodymium, Lanthanum, etc.) are essential for many production processes and products, especially for future technologies (energy technologies, IT, etc.). Many of the rare earths are heavily concentrated in a view regions, such as China, while their availability is limited (“peak rare earth metals”). As a result the supply of rare earth metals for  European industries is insecure. Supply shortages would lead to substantial disruptions in existing economic systems. According studies on a national level do exist for several countries, a comprehensive European perspective will be applied in this project.

iClime

Direct impacts of climate change in Europe may occur gradually, while indirect impacts (spill overs from global climate events, affecting the supply chains of European companies, the export markets, financial markets, resource availability, etc.) may affect European systems of production and consumption patterns earlier, unfold in a very short period of time and lead to substantial disruptions in the existing production and consumption systems. Examples are natural resources and basic products with highly concentrated supply chains, where Europe heavily relies on imports (cotton, soy crops, rare earth metals, etc.) - these supply chains may be disrupted by climate events in the region of origin. According studies on a national level do exist for several countries, a comprehensive European perspective will be applied in this project.

LIFELONG LEARNING - LEONARDO DA VINCI

A Leonardo da Vinci Partnership is a framework for small-scale cooperation activities between

organisations working in the field of vocational education and training ("VET") which will be cooperating on themes of mutual interest to the participating organisations. Projects can focus

more on the active participation of trainees, while others will concentrate on the cooperation

between teachers, trainers or VET-professionals. The cooperation may not only include VET schools or institutions but also enterprises, social partners or other VET stakeholders. They can cooperate at national, regional or local level, but also at sector level, such as within VET-fields or economic sectors.
